Arsenal are reportedly showing strong interest in signing Cardiff City teenager Axel Donczew, who broke the Welsh club's record as their youngest-ever player last season. The 15-year-old midfielder made his debut at 15 years and 234 days, catching the attention of the Premier League champions.
Arsenal's Summer Activity
The Gunners have already been active in the transfer market this summer. Piero Hincapie has been signed permanently following his loan spell, while Ilian Meslier has joined to bolster the goalkeeping ranks. On the outgoing side, Leandro Trossard departed for Besiktas, and Jakub Kiwior completed a permanent move to Porto.
Arsenal are also close to finalizing a deal for Club Brugge's Christos Tzolis, with an agreement reportedly reached. However, the club is also focusing on youth acquisitions, with Donczew emerging as a key target.
Donczew's Record-Breaking Debut
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal have strong interest in Donczew. Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy praised the youngster after his debut, saying: "It's a bit surreal for them in this moment, but you can see from their families it's an extraordinarily powerful occasion for them. It's an insight into what we want this club to become - exceptionally talented players from the city representing their home club."
Barry-Murphy added: "For Axel to come on and show real signs of what we've seen in training at such a young age. We finished the game with Troy Perrett on one side and Axel on the other. He's very much a central player who can play inside in attacking midfield areas."
Arsenal's Youth Strategy
Should Arsenal complete a deal, Donczew would join the Gunners' academy setup, with potential for first-team exposure in the future. The North London side has a track record of signing promising young players. Last season, they sealed a double deal for Ecuadorian brothers Edwin and Holger Quintero from Independiente del Valle, who will formalize their move when they turn 18 in August 2027.
Arsenal also showed interest in Leicester City's Jeremy Monga but were beaten to his signature by Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Donczew's addition would continue Arsenal's focus on building for the future while maintaining their status as champions.
