Arsenal have reportedly secured the signing of highly-rated teenager Elijah Upson from local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad ahead of defending the Premier League title. Meanwhile, Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior is scheduled for contract talks with the Spanish giants, ending speculation of a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal Win Race for Elijah Upson
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Elijah Upson, the 18-year-old son of former Premier League and England defender Matthew Upson. The young centre-back had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Monaco. However, the Gunners have emerged victorious in the pursuit of the Tottenham academy product.
Upson made 31 appearances for Tottenham's Under-18 Premier League side, showcasing his versatility as a central defender who can also operate as a wing-back or right-back. His addition is expected to bolster Arsenal's defensive options as they aim to retain their league crown.
Vinicius Junior Contract Talks Set
In other transfer news, Vinicius Junior is set to hold talks with Real Madrid at the end of July to finalise a new contract, according to Spanish publication AS. The Brazilian winger, whose World Cup campaign ended with a round-of-16 defeat to Norway, had been linked with a move to Arsenal, who are in the market for a winger this summer.
However, the report suggests that Real Madrid's leadership no longer have concerns over Vinicius's future. His current contract runs until June 2027, and an extension is anticipated. The talks were arranged shortly after Brazil's elimination, putting an end to rumours of a sensational transfer to the Premier League champions.
Arsenal have already made Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent and signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier this summer, as Arteta builds a squad capable of sustained success.
