Apple will release its all-new iPhone Duo on October 23, marking one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in the company's history. The device was first revealed during Apple's September event at its headquarters in Cupertino.
First foldable iPhone features a book-style design
The iPhone Duo features a passport-sized design that opens like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch iPad-style display. It is the first time Apple has used foldable screen technology, a feature that rivals such as Samsung and Google have long offered.
Apple has worked to address common complaints about rival foldables. The main display has a matte finish that reduces glare and makes the crease down the middle of the device harder to see. The phone also includes a tough hinge, aerospace-grade aluminium, and support ribs designed to add stiffness and strength.
Software and accessory compatibility
The Duo is compatible with the Apple Pencil stylus, allowing owners to write and draw on the larger panel. Smart software adapts menu bars and apps to the screen being used, and applications switch seamlessly between the front and main display. For example, users can start a Netflix movie on the smaller cover panel and continue watching on the larger screen when opened.
Other features include a dual-lens camera, Touch ID fingerprint scanner, a speedy A20 Pro processor, long battery life, and fast charging. The device also supports MagSafe wireless technology for wire-free charging and attaching accessories such as wallets and battery packs.
Price and pre-order details
The iPhone Duo will arrive in stores from October 23, with pre-orders expected to be available from October 16. The device starts at £1,999 and can increase to over £3,100 when adding more memory.
Apple's new CEO John Ternus said: "When we designed iPhone Duo, we wanted to create the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone."
