Gary Neville has called on Manchester United to sell Mason Mount this summer in order to generate funds for a squad overhaul. The former United defender believes the club needs at least four new signings to compete domestically and in Europe, and that offloading the midfielder could help finance those additions.
Mount has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his £60 million move from Chelsea in 2023, making just 69 appearances in three seasons due to injuries and competition. This campaign, the 27-year-old has featured only 20 times in all competitions, with manager Michael Carrick’s side securing Champions League football after a 3-2 victory over Liverpool.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville identified left-back, centre-back, and two midfielders as priority targets. He said: “I think United need a left-back… they need a centre-back, 100 per cent, and they need two midfield players. Those are the four priorities right now.”
To fund a potential fifth signing, Neville suggested trading Mount for a more versatile player. “If you could then maybe trade Mason Mount for someone else who maybe can play in and out… then I would say go for a fifth,” he added.
Neville had expressed doubts about Mount’s signing in 2023, arguing that United should have pursued a more established option like Jude Bellingham or Declan Rice. With Mount under contract until 2028, any sale would require a willing buyer, but Neville’s comments signal a growing belief that the England international is not part of the club’s long-term plans.
