The Honda Jazz has been identified as the top choice for pensioners over the age of 70 seeking a second-hand vehicle. The model has already been flagged as the “Best All-Rounder” for older motorists by Sage, and its design, practicality, and reliability make it a standout option.
Design and Accessibility Features
The Jazz features a high seating position that provides excellent and elevated views of the road. This is particularly beneficial for older drivers who may struggle with visibility. Additionally, the vehicle is easier to enter and exit, a crucial factor for motorists with balance issues.
Honda introduced its ‘Magic Seats’ concept on the Jazz in 2001, and it has remained a staple feature. The five-seater is suitable for family use, making trips with grandchildren effortless. The rear seats can be folded completely flat, increasing cargo space by up to four times, expanding the boot from 354 litres to over 1,300 litres. This extra room can accommodate a folding wheelchair or mobility scooter.
Reliability and Safety Ratings
The Jazz retains physical knobs and large buttons for basic functions, avoiding confusing touchscreens, which is advantageous for older users. Reliability is a key strength, with analysis from Warranty Solutions Group showing that the Honda was the UK’s most reliable used car, generating the lowest volume of repair claims based on warranty data.
WhatCar? has given the model a reliability rating of 92.4%, and it was named the most reliable small car in their 2023 used car reliability survey. Euro NCAP has also awarded the Jazz its highest five-star safety rating.
Cost and Value
In terms of cost, a second-hand Jazz can be purchased for around £3,000. Motorists could secure a better-condition vehicle with just over 50,000 miles on the clock for a little over £5,000, offering significant value for older drivers.
