Mike Kelly founded Outpost Workshop in 2019 out of his parents' garage in Aigburth, initially having very little knowledge of running a business or creating intricate designs. The business uses a specialist CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machine to carve metal into raised letters, producing custom branding irons and leather stamps.
Luxury clients and a breakthrough moment
Over the years, the workshop has attracted prestigious, luxury clients, including Aston Martin, Bentley, and London's Savoy hotel. Aston Martin commissioned a bespoke letter-set used to personalise a customer's car leather, a breakthrough moment for the business which boosted Mike's confidence.
Mike maintains an intense attention to detail, regularly examining pieces under a microscope to tweak machine settings and sharpen corners. Regardless of the client's prestige, Mike applies the exact same high-standard craftsmanship to local individuals as he does to luxury brands like Aston Martin.
Overcoming personal challenges
Mike experienced severe anxiety and depression that made it overwhelming to handle emails, finances, and orders, which he managed with sertraline and the support of his partner, Gosia. Reflecting on his journey, Mike advises aspiring entrepreneurs to take risks and pursue their passions, viewing the chance to turn a hobby into a living as an incredible opportunity.
