In a move that will delight bargain hunters across the nation, pub giant JD Wetherspoon has announced a spectacular one-day sale. This Thursday, 4th April, prices on food and drink will be rolled back to what customers would have paid nearly a decade ago.
The annual 'Tax Day' event is a cheeky celebration by the chain to mark the end of the financial year. Founder and Chairman Tim Martin, a well-known critic of the UK's tax burden on pubs, is using the day to make a point about the impact of VAT and business rates.
What's on the Menu?
Patrons can expect staggering discounts at participating locations. A pint of Ruddles Best bitter will be available for just 99p, a price not seen since 2000. Other highlights include:
- Steak and Ale Meal: A hearty plate of steak, ale pie, a drink, and unlimited peas or chips for just £7.99.
- Lavazza Coffee: A hot cup of coffee for a mere 99p.
- Breakfast Deal: A traditional breakfast with unlimited tea or coffee for £4.99.
The discounts apply all day, from the moment the pubs open until they close, offering a full day of budget-friendly feasting and socialising.
More Than Just a Sale
Tim Martin emphasised that the event is designed to highlight a serious economic issue. He argues that the UK's hospitality sector is at a significant disadvantage compared to supermarkets, which pay no VAT on food, allowing them to sell alcohol at very low margins as a loss leader.
"The tax disparity allows supermarkets to subsidise alcohol prices, making it difficult for pubs to compete on a level playing field," Martin stated. This price cut is a dramatic illustration of what pub prices could be like without what he calls an unfair tax burden.
So, if you fancy a taste of the past and a pint for less than a pound, your local 'Spoons is the place to be this Thursday. Just be prepared for it to be busy!
