Wallasey mum opens calm play café after leaving teaching

A Wirral mum has launched a new business after leaving her 10-year career as a primary school teacher. Lucy Brown, 31, from Wallasey, has now opened The Playdate Café on Mount Pleasant Road.

Lucy, who is mum to two-year-old Ava, described the journey to creating the play space as a whirlwind of excitement after receiving the keys to the venue, adding that her family and friends have been her biggest support.

A calm environment for families

Speaking to the ECHO, Lucy said: "The Playdate Café is supposed to be a warm, welcoming environment. It's not a loud, bright, sticky-fingered, kids screaming and running around environment at all. It is calm. There are only eight tables in there. As a mum, in some of the places that I've been in, I felt so overwhelmed and nervous to be out with Ava, especially when she was little."

Ava's birth sparked Lucy's change of career, inspiring her to create a space she could shape around her growing family, with everything she wished for under one roof.

Opening details and features

The official opening is scheduled for October 17. The café is open Monday to Saturday with differing hours daily.

The name The Playdate Café stems from an inside joke with friends who would send messages saying: "Oh, do you fancy a playdate?" Lucy said: "Oh, we'll be able to say, 'Do you fancy a playdate at The Playdate Cafe?'"

The venue offers party hire packages, quality food and coffee, and has a section for each age group, including a roleplay corner, a selection of books, and a play zone. Sessions can be booked online.
