Waitrose Opens First Airport Stores at Heathrow Terminal 2

Waitrose is embarking on a significant retail expansion by preparing to open its first-ever airport stores at a major London travel hub next month. This strategic move marks a new chapter for the premium supermarket chain as it enters the competitive airport retail sector.

Strategic Expansion at Heathrow Terminal 2

The high-end grocer will be taking over four existing Relay store locations within Heathrow Terminal 2, which serves an impressive estimated 20 million passengers each year. The initial store is scheduled to commence operations in May, with further plans to establish two additional airside outlets and one landside location.

Premium Food-to-Go Offerings

With a dedicated focus on catering to busy travellers, Waitrose will provide an extensive selection of convenient food-to-go options. Passengers will be treated to a wide variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, sushi selections, and snack pots. The offering will also feature items from Waitrose's premium No. 1 range, alongside fresh fruit selections, granola options, smoothies, and baked goods including croissants for early morning departures.

To accommodate the needs of time-pressed passengers, the first upper-level airside store will maintain extended operating hours from 5am to 10pm, seven days per week.

Executive Perspectives on the Partnership

Charlotte Di Cello, Waitrose Chief Commercial Officer, commented: 'Launching at Heathrow represents our inaugural move into airport retail and constitutes an important strategic step in growing our brand presence by bringing our premium offer to more customers in high-traffic locations.'

'In collaboration with Lagardère Travel Retail and Relay, our comprehensive food-to-go offer will launch across four stores in Terminal 2 by year's end, building upon the progress we're already achieving in travel retail while continuing our investment in our traditional shops and online offerings.'

Nicholas Dunne, Commercial Director of Lagardère Travel Retail UK & Ireland, added: 'This partnership with Waitrose signifies a substantial step forward in our ambition to elevate the food-to-go experience within our blended Travel Essentials portfolio.'

'By introducing one of Britain's most trusted premium food brands to Relay at Heathrow Terminal 2, we are combining exceptional quality, convenience, and strong brand recognition to better serve passengers in fast-paced travel environments.'

Heathrow's Culinary Dominance

Waitrose appears to have selected an optimal location for its airport retail expansion, as Heathrow continues to outperform other UK airports and global hubs regarding culinary offerings. According to recent research analyzing data from Instagram, Google, TripAdvisor, and Yelp to create a comprehensive 'Travel Foodie Score' for international airports, London Heathrow emerged as the global leader.

The London airport surpassed major culinary capitals including Tokyo and Hong Kong, boasting the highest average Google rating of any airport worldwide at 4.28 stars and accumulating nearly 900,000 Instagram posts. This resulted in an exceptional travel foodie score of 99.16, significantly higher than second-place Tokyo Haneda's score of 88.24.

Japanese Airport Culinary Presence

While Heathrow claimed the top position, Japan demonstrated remarkable culinary strength with four airports securing positions within the top ten rankings. Tokyo Narita achieved fourth place with a score of 81.28, Fukuoka secured sixth position with 77.31, and Chubu Centrair placed ninth with 66.44 points.

Paul Stewart, CEO of My Baggage who conducted the research, noted: 'For numerous travellers, the holiday experience commences the moment they enter the terminal, and dining quality has become a major component of that overall experience.'

'Our comprehensive study indicates that London Heathrow currently represents the gold standard for airport food, combining high-quality culinary options with substantial social media appeal. It's particularly noteworthy to observe Japan's dominance in the rankings, with four airports appearing in the top ten positions.'
