A Vinted shopper has called out one type of seller that they claim 'needs to be stopped' after realising the item they'd purchased had arrived 'damp'.
With the rise of so-called 'fast fashion' brands, many people have chosen to turn to buying clothes second-hand in order to prevent items from going to landfill. Because of this, resale platforms such as Vinted have grown in popularity as shoppers can sometimes find bargain items at discount prices. They're also a great way for sellers to earn some cash for items they no longer use or want.
Some people have even managed to make a living from their Vinted shopfronts, with some sellers revealing they can earn thousands from reselling various brands and items for a profit.
Extra effort backfires
In order to earn better reviews, some sellers might go the extra mile when packing up the items in an effort to give buyers a nicer experience when unboxing the item. But sometimes, this extra work could end up having the opposite effect.
One Vinted shopper has taken to Reddit to urge sellers to stop adding various scents to the items in question. "Sellers, please stop spraying everything with scents," they wrote in the caption of their post.
To share some more context, they shared a screenshot from a conversation they had with a seller, who revealed she'd sprayed some fabric softener onto the clothes they'd sold. While this may sound nice in theory, the buyer had seemingly told the seller that it had made the clothing item 'damp'.
To this, the Reddit user added: "I still gave four stars, because otherwise the item is as described. But it was so saturated with refresher (that) it's wet. Now I'm going to wash it either way, but pulling out a wet item is concerning."
Why do Vinted sellers add scents to their packaging?
Vinted sellers may sometimes add scents to packages or clothing to create an upscale "boutique-like" unboxing experience, make second-hand items feel fresh, or cover up storage and musty odours. However, many buyers dislike this practice because heavy fragrances can trigger migraines, allergies, or asthma, and may make the item feel unwashed.
And people seem to have been on the buyer's side, as several other Reddit users took to the comments section of the post to share their own thoughts, with one person writing: "It's so annoying because it can be a real headache to get the scent out of the clothes. Worst offenders are the sellers that douse the clothes in sickly heavy perfume."
Someone else said: "Not everyone likes the same smells. I will never understand why people do this. I wash all my stuff with unscented detergent so any fragranced clothes are so strong to me and I usually have to wash them multiple times to remove the smell."
Some also pointed out the worries that the the clothing items had been damp, in a sealed package for days at a time, which could lead to mould growth. One person said: "Everyone don’t like the same smell. Some have allergies, sensitivities. A wet item on arrival is unacceptable and not as described, item could have grown mould. Those four stars was more then they deserved."
