A simple 10-minute recipe can turn ordinary tinned tomato soup into a richer, creamier dish that tastes homemade. The method, shared by A Duck's Oven, uses just a handful of extra ingredients and has earned a near-perfect five-star rating from more than 220 reviews.
What you need to upgrade the soup
The recipe requires one can of tomato soup, 150ml of double cream, half a teaspoon of garlic powder, half a teaspoon of onion powder, one teaspoon of Italian seasoning, a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper, half a teaspoon of salt, a quarter teaspoon of black pepper, Parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
In a saucepan, combine the tomato soup and cream. Milk can be used instead of cream, but the result will not be as creamy. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper, then let it sit over medium-low heat for about 10 minutes.
How to serve and adjust the flavour
Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh basil. It can also be served with a homemade grilled cheese sandwich if desired. If the chosen brand of tomato soup already contains considerable salt, the additional seasoning can be omitted.
It is advisable to taste the soup throughout the cooking process and modify the flavourings accordingly. If fresh basil is not available, jarred basil will suffice, though fresh herbs are preferable for enhanced flavour.
