UK Carpentry Firm Collapses Into Administration After 50 Years

A long-established Staffordshire joinery and carpentry manufacturer has entered administration, bringing uncertainty to a business with roots stretching back almost 50 years. WJL Contracts Limited, based in Stoke-on-Trent, appointed joint administrators on May 29, 2026, according to a notice published in The London Gazette on June 9.

The company, which trades from Units 1 and 2, Ormonde Street, Stoke-on-Trent, specialises in the manufacture of bespoke builders' carpentry and joinery products for the construction sector. WJL traces its origins back to 1978, when the business was founded as Winston Joinery Ltd by Les Wagg.

History and Expansion

The company built a reputation for producing high-quality traditional and bespoke joinery products before expanding into installation services in 2000 as customer demand evolved. The firm underwent further transformation in 2009, when Jamie Lovatt joined the business alongside Andrew Wagg, who had succeeded his father as the company's leader.

Following Andrew's retirement, the management team repositioned the company as a specialist bespoke joinery manufacturing contractor serving commercial, healthcare and education projects. According to company information, WJL employed an in-house design and manufacturing model, offering clients a complete service from concept through to installation.

Commitment to Quality

The business promoted its commitment to quality, safety and defect-free handovers, while maintaining its manufacturing base in Stoke-on-Trent. At the time of entering administration, WJL described itself as having produced bespoke joinery in the city for more than 40 years, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing technology.

No details have yet been released regarding the causes of the administration, the company's financial position, or the future of its workforce and ongoing projects. The joint administrators are expected to assess the company's affairs and explore options for the business and its assets.
