Typo, the Australian stationery brand owned by fashion group Cotton On, is set to close all of its high street stores across the UK by 2027. The company will also discontinue its online store as part of its withdrawal from the UK market.
The retailer currently operates around 13 stores nationwide, although that number has been steadily shrinking following a series of closures in recent months. The remaining shops have no official closing date but are expected to shut down in the coming months.
Already-closed locations
A number of Typo outlets across the UK have already closed their doors, including stores at Westfield Stratford and White City in London, along with its concession inside Selfridges and a standalone branch in Angel.
The retailer's remaining shop at Eldon Square in Newcastle is still trading, although it is currently running a closing-down sale ahead of its planned closure.
Company statement and reasons
In a statement, the company said: "After careful consideration we are closing Typo’s operations in the United Kingdom, with all stores and online trading to close by early 2027."
"We recognise the impact of this decision on our Typo UK team who are already aware of this, and our priority is to support our people through this transition. Cotton On, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids will continue to operate through online and wholesale channels in the UK, and we remain confident in their long-term growth."
Despite success in other parts of the world, "ongoing high rent and operating costs, combined with softer sales, mean there is no sustainable path today for Typo in the UK", according to Chronicle Live.
