Tylers Department Store to Close After 104 Years as Demolition Starts
Tylers to Close After 104 Years as Demolition Starts

Tylers, a family-run department store in Loughborough that has served the community for 104 years, will close its doors for good in January 2027. The closure follows confirmation that the Carillon Court shopping centre, where the store is located, will be demolished to make way for student accommodation.

End of an Era for Long-Running Family Business

The store, which has been a fixture in the town since 1922, has weathered the Great Depression, world wars, and economic cycles. Director Steve Tyler expressed disappointment for the staff, many of whom have worked there for decades. 'We wanted to give the staff as long as possible because, obviously, it’s been a bit of a blow for them,' he said. 'It’s very disappointing for us as far as the staff are concerned because we’ve got a lot of people who have been with us for a long time, some for up to 40 years.'

Dispute and Development Deal

The future of Tylers had been uncertain since 2025, when Leicester Commercial Limited lodged several applications with Charnwood Borough Council to demolish Carillon Court, a 1970s mall. In May 2026, developers won permission to demolish part of the site and later submitted a wider demolition proposal. Initially, Tylers, which owned its shop and a nearby car park, resisted the plans. However, the company has now agreed a deal with the developers, securing a spot in the new development, which will include a mix of student accommodation and retail units.

Business as Usual for Six Months

Mr Tyler confirmed that the store will operate as usual for the next six months before closing. After that, the business will continue online. 'Both the developer and we are happy that we’ve come together, and we’ve got the option of the new unit when the new development is constructed,' he said. He added: 'Without our amazing staff and our loyal customers, we wouldn’t have reached the hundred years that we’ve been in business. We’ve been through the Great Depression, world wars, and economic booms and busts. So we have seen a lot in our 104-year history, but this is just a continuation of the development of the business.'

Developer's Perspective

Jamie Lewis, director of Leicester Commercial Limited, welcomed the agreement, stating that the redevelopment would bring 'vibrancy and life' to the town centre. He described Carillon Court as an 'eyesore' and said contractors would begin demolition as soon as Tylers moves out, pending planning permission. 'All towns and cities need people living in them. Without people living in them, more and more retail will be lost,' he explained.

Impact on Loughborough Town Centre

The closure marks a significant change for Loughborough, as Tylers was one of the town's longest-running shops. The new development is expected to provide student housing and retail space, aiming to revitalise the area. The deal ensures that Tylers will have a presence in the new development, though the timeline for its return remains unclear.
