Pesto, the Italian restaurant at the Trafford Centre, has closed after nearly 20 years. The venue, located on the upper floor of the shopping centre's Great Hall area, first opened in 2007.
The arrival came just a year after the original Pesto opened in Deansgate, which was based in the spot now home to Motley. Founded by Sara and Neil Gatt, Pesto became known for its Piattini Italian small plates, including calamari, spinach and ricotta cannelloni, spicy 'nduja sausage risotto, and deep fried Arborio rice balls. It also served individual 6" Pizzetta pizzas with a range of toppings.
Statement thanks loyal guests
A statement on the restaurant's website confirmed the closure, saying: "Unfortunately, this restaurant is now closed as a Pesto. Thank you to our loyal guests for all your time spent with us."
The Manchester Evening News has approached both the Trafford Centre and Mitchells & Butlers, who now own the brand, for further information. It is understood the restaurant officially closed on Wednesday (September 30).
More than ten sites remain
Across the north west and the Midlands, there are now over ten Pesto sites, mostly set inside pubs. Pesto was acquired by Mitchells & Butlers in 2024 for a reported £15m as part of plans to expand the brand's offerings.
For customers in Greater Manchester, the closest Pesto will now be at The Dicconson Arms in Wigan's Appley Bridge. They are also based at The Walton Arms in Lancashire's Higher Walton, near Warrington, as well as having a Pesto site in Widnes.
New arrivals at the Trafford Centre
The news comes amid a series of new arrivals at the Trafford Centre across retail and food. The shopping space recently welcomed The Entertainer and GARAGE, as well as a new Disney Store inside the Selfridges.
The first ever UNIQLO inside the Trafford Centre will also be opening later this month. Dave's Hot Chicken and Suitsupply are also two big names set to open later this year.
