Trader Joe's to Open 25 New Stores Across 14 States This Year
Trader Joe's Plans 25 New Stores in 14 States in 2026

Trader Joe's is set to open 25 new stores across 14 states this year, the California-based grocery chain announced on Wednesday. This expansion adds to its previously announced pipeline of future locations, with nine additional stores now in development, bringing the total upcoming openings to more than two dozen.

New Store Locations

The nine newly announced development sites span eight states: Phoenix, Arizona; Sarasota, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; Quincy, Massachusetts; Farmington Hills, Michigan; Syracuse and Yonkers, New York; University Heights, Ohio; and West Jordan, Utah. An additional 16 locations remain on the company's list of upcoming store openings, including sites in Tucson, Arizona; Anaheim Hills and Paso Robles, California; Orlando and West Palm Beach, Florida; Johns Creek, Georgia; Oswego, Illinois; Merriam, Kansas; Lafayette, Mandeville, and New Orleans, Louisiana; Reading, Massachusetts; West Orange, New Jersey; Herriman, Utah; and Seattle and Spokane Valley, Washington.

Controlled Growth Strategy

In an episode of the “Inside Trader Joe’s” podcast, marketing executives Tara Miller and Matt Sloan explained that the company deliberately targets locations based on population density, traffic patterns, and local parking availability. Miller and Sloan said the chain follows a strategy of “controlled growth” and evaluates expansions strictly through business-driven analytics rather than local demand alone. “Our decisions, they’re business decisions,” Miller said on the podcast. “We’re excited when people are excited about us, but that’s really not what’s driving the decisions about what brings a Trader Joe’s.”

Customer Satisfaction and Expansion History

The expansion follows recent data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, which named Trader Joe’s America’s favorite grocery store, earning a customer satisfaction score of 86 points to edge out rival supermarket chains Publix and Costco. The retailer, known for its affordable prices, private-label products, and popular canvas tote bags, operates more than 600 locations nationwide after adding nearly 100 stores between 2023 and 2024.

“We are proud to be joining the neighborhood, and to continue our commitment to providing nourishment to the surrounding communities through our Neighborhood Shares program,” the company said in a statement. Specific opening dates have not yet been determined, though locations have been selected.
