Sandro Tonali has broken his silence after agreeing a £100m move from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur, admitting he wanted a fresh challenge while leaving the Magpies on excellent terms. The Italy international jetted to London to begin a new chapter, citing family reasons and the influence of manager Roberto De Zerbi in his decision.
Tonali Confirms Desire for Change
Speaking at Milan's airport before his departure, Tonali told reporters: "Absolutely. We've decided to make a change, so we're ready for this new adventure." He added: "Newcastle wanted the best for me and we wanted the best deal for them. So I think that once you go like this it is different, so we are all happy and I am ready for the new challenge."
Newcastle had been reluctant to sell to Spurs but held out for a £100m fee, with Tonali making a startling claim that the club prioritised the player's wishes alongside securing a huge transfer sum.
De Zerbi and Family Key in Spurs Choice
When asked why he chose Tottenham, Tonali explained: "Let's say Roberto De Zerbi had a big percentage in this, and for a life choice, we come from Newcastle and our lives change with our child's birth. So we decided to change a bit. De Zerbi made a great difference and did the job very well."
The Magpies were informed of Tonali's desire to leave via his agent Giuseppe Riso earlier this month, with clubs including Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham approached. Spurs emerged as the only club meeting all criteria: the £100m asking price, agent fees, and Tonali's £275,000-per-week wages.
No Return to Serie A
Tonali confirmed there was no chance of returning to Italy this window despite rumours linking him to AC Milan and Juventus. "It's always been very difficult. We've talked, but this opportunity has never arisen," he said. He joked that he would be open to signing for Milan again in the future, the club Newcastle paid £55m for his services in 2023.
The transfer marks the end of Tonali's three-year stint at Newcastle, where he made 98 appearances and scored 12 goals, helping the club secure Champions League qualification in his first season.
