TG Jones Galashiels store closing January 2027

TG Jones has confirmed that its Galashiels store will close for the final time on January 9, 2027. The announcement was made on the store's official Facebook page, where staff also revealed that a clearance sale had been launched on September 29 to remove all stock before the closure.

The statement read: "Important Announcement. We regret to announce that TGJones Galashiels will be closing its doors for the last time on the 9th of January 2027. There will be a clearance sale until then starting 29th of September." It added: "At this present time we have no news of any post office relocation. We wish to thank our customers who have shopped with us over the years."

Locals react with sadness and frustration

Shoppers have expressed disappointment at the loss of another store in the town. One Facebook user commented: "Sorry to learn this. Good people and a shop that will be much missed." Another wrote: "Aw so sorry to hear this x."

A third commenter noted the store's long history: "Sad news, been at same location for decades with slightly different name on the door, John Menzies then WH Smith. It's hard for this type of business to keep up with the new technology world we live in." Others voiced frustration, with one writing: "Another empty shop in Gala. It's a good job we've got the tapestry."

Part of wider restructuring

The Galashiels closure is part of a series of TG Jones store closures across the UK. The Inverness branch is also set to close on October 6, 2026, with a clearance sale underway. Other Scottish stores in Stirling, Fort William, and Ayr have already closed this year, raising questions from locals about access to Post Office services.

TG Jones is undergoing a major restructuring plan approved by the High Court, which includes 150 closures announced in September. The brand, owned by Modella Capital, took over all 480 WHSmith stores in summer 2025 in a deal worth £76 million. The Daily Record has approached TG Jones for comment.
