Tesco shoppers have recently uncovered a hidden feature beneath the supermarket's book displays: drawers stocked with additional titles. While some customers have been helping themselves to these books, the drawers are actually intended for staff use only.
What Did Shoppers Find?
Craig, a TikTok user known as @booksandlifewithcraig, posted a video showing himself opening drawers underneath Tesco's book shelves. He rummaged through the contents to find titles not yet on display, encouraging others to do the same. The video quickly gained attention, with many viewers expressing surprise at the discovery.
However, according to The Mirror, these drawers are designed for staff to store stock and replenish shelves when they run low. They are not meant for customer access.
Customer Reactions
In the comments, many admitted their "jaws dropped" and confessed they "didn't know those shelves could do that." One book lover revealed she "didn't think you were allowed to touch them," to which Craig responded, "yolo (you only live once)." Another wrote: "It feels illegal to open these drawers. I feel like I will be told off."
Some users correctly noted that the drawers are for staff. "Pretty sure that's for staff so they can stock the shelves," one TikToker said, while another described helping oneself as "naughty." One person argued there shouldn't "be gaps on the shelves," but another pointed out that staff have competing priorities.
Tesco's Official Stance
Tesco advises that the storage beneath the fixture is used for additional stock that colleagues use to replenish shelves. The supermarket chain confirms that customers are not invited to carry out this activity in stores. If a book is out of stock, customers are encouraged to ask a member of staff for assistance, who can check the hidden shelves on their behalf.
