Tesco Scraps Delivery Fees Over £25 for World Cup Weekends

Tesco has announced a major change to its delivery service ahead of what it expects to be one of its busiest weekends of the year, driven by warm weather and the World Cup football match between England and Norway on Saturday night. The UK's biggest supermarket will remove delivery fees on Tesco Whoosh orders over £25 for selected dates throughout July.

Free Delivery on Matchdays

The offer will run for the next few World Cup matchdays, regardless of England's results, a Tesco spokesperson confirmed. Tesco Whoosh is an on-demand grocery delivery service that delivers items from local stores in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Customers using the service during the promotional period will automatically receive free delivery when their basket reaches £25.

“Excitement is building across the country with customers enjoying the summer weather, hosting gatherings, and getting involved in the build up to England’s crucial match,” the spokesperson said. “This is expected to be one of our busiest weekends this year for sales of barbecue food and drinks, and we have some great deals available for people stocking up on all their match-day essentials.”

Record Demand for Rapid Deliveries

Last Sunday saw one of the busiest ever days for Tesco Whoosh deliveries as customers chose rapid grocery deliveries to enjoy the England game. “We expect to see high demand again as we’re removing delivery charges tomorrow and for future game dates,” the spokesperson added.

Ahead of England’s game on Saturday, Tesco is expecting to sell over 4 million packs of crisps and nuts, around 2.7 million lagers, over 1 million packs of barbecue meat, nearly 1.5 million packs of coleslaw and dip, and 800,000 packs of ice cubes.

Promotional Dates

Free Whoosh delivery will be available all day on Saturday, July 11; Wednesday, July 15; Sunday, July 19; and from Monday, July 20 to Sunday, July 26. The offer applies regardless of England’s results.

Kick-off for the England-Norway game is 10pm UK time (5pm local in Kansas City). Norway’s Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in four games, while Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard has been a key player in their historic run to the quarter-finals.
