Tesco offers drivers 8p a litre off fuel in new promotion

Tesco is offering drivers 8p a litre off fuel when they spend £60 in store, with the promotion running for a limited time. From today (Thursday, October 1) customers will receive a coupon to save 8p a litre off diesel and unleaded petrol when they spend £60 in a single in-store transaction until Sunday, October 18, the supermarket chain said.

Promotion details and redemption

The coupon can be redeemed at Tesco-branded forecourts across Great Britain and Northern Ireland until Sunday, October 25. However, the coupons are not available in the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. You don't need a Clubcard to get a coupon, so make sure you keep an eye out for it at checkout.

The maximum saving you can unlock is £8, and it's limited to one spend between October 1 and October 18 after discounts, promotions and coupons are applied, and exclusions apply.

Diesel prices hit record high

It comes as the Chancellor John Healey said he was "concerned" about diesel prices hitting a record high this week. According to figures compiled by the RAC, the average price of a litre of diesel stood at 199.18p on Monday, making it 56.8p more expensive than at the start of the US-Iran war on February 28 this year.

Meanwhile, the cost of unleaded petrol has also been climbing in recent weeks and is currently at an average of 174.13p per litre, up by 41.3p since the start of the conflict.

Government response and RAC warning

Mr Healey told ITV News: "It's something I'm concerned about and people have seen the diesel and petrol prices rising over recent months. They've seen us put in place a Fuel Finder so people can find out the cheapest price on the forecourts around them. They've seen us put in place a freeze on any rise in diesel (duty) until the end of the year."

The Chancellor was asked about if he's considering extending the current 5p cut in fuel duty beyond the end of 2026, but said a decision on that will be announced in his upcoming Budget, which will be delivered to MPs on October 28.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "The average price of a litre of diesel has now reached the highest level in UK history, in what will be a financial blow to households and businesses that use their vehicles regularly. The cost of filling up an average family car is now almost £110, £31 more than it was at the start of the US-Iran conflict. This spells pain not only at the pumps for drivers, but for everyone who buys goods or services that rely on diesel lorries and vans; undoubtedly these increased costs will be passed on to consumers. Only a sustained lower oil price – over several weeks, not days – will lead to cheaper prices at the pumps."
