A supermarket own-brand tin of baked beans has beaten Heinz in a taste test, with Tesco's offering impressing the most at just 43p a tin.
Katherine McPhillips, who conducted the test, compared baked beans from Morrisons, Aldi, Marks and Spencer, Lidl and Tesco to see if any could match or beat the classic Heinz brand, which costs more than £1 a tin.
Morrisons and Aldi Disappoint
Morrisons' beans at 60p were described as bland and boring, with a bitter aftertaste that left the tester unable to finish a spoonful. Aldi's Bramwell beans at 39p were plain and lacked seasoning, with a sauce that was too runny.
Marks and Spencer and Lidl Impress
Marks and Spencer's beans at 40p had a smooth sauce and a rich, tangy flavour, though the beans were a little too firm. Lidl's Newgate beans at 39p were savoury with a slight sweetness, offering a good balance, though the salt was noticeable.
Tesco Takes the Top Spot
Tesco's beans at 43p stood out for their pleasantly sweet taste and deeply rich tomato sauce. They had the most flavour of all the tins, with a thick sauce and tender beans that stayed firm. The tester enjoyed them so much she ate the whole bowl for lunch.
A 420g tin of Tesco baked beans costs 43p, compared to £1.40 for a 415g tin of Heinz. The test concluded that spending more is not necessary for a tasty tin of baked beans.
