Swansea City are set to complete the signing of Ghana winger Joseph Opoku after fresh details of the £6 million transfer emerged.
Deal Details
According to transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Swansea have agreed a package worth €7.3 million (£6.3 million) with Belgian club Zulte Waregem. The deal includes an initial fee of €6.5 million (£5.6 million), with a further €800,000 (£683,000) in performance-related add-ons. Zulte Waregem have also negotiated a 15% sell-on clause.
Medical and Move
Opoku is expected to undergo his medical today after travelling to Munich on Wednesday before heading to Austria, where Swansea are holding their pre-season training camp. The 20-year-old is set to become Vitor Matos' fourth signing of the summer, following Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo and Leo Walta.
Competition
Swansea beat competition from across Europe for the winger. Premier League newcomers Hull City, Serie A side Genoa, La Liga outfit Real Sociedad, Turkish side Trabzonspor and Russian club Krasnodar were all reportedly tracking the Ghana international.
Rapid Rise
Opoku joined Zulte Waregem from Ghanaian side Great Corinthians in 2024. He helped the Belgian club win promotion and then scored 10 goals with six assists in 34 league appearances last season. Capable of playing across the front three, he is most comfortable on the left wing, where his pace and direct running have made him one of Belgium's brightest young talents.
International Career
He made his senior debut for Ghana earlier this year and was included in the Black Stars' preliminary World Cup squad before narrowly missing out on selection for the tournament in North America.
Further Moves
Swansea are also working on a deal for New Zealand international Elijah Just as they look to add more attacking firepower before the new season. The Swans continue their pre-season with a game against Italian outfit Udinese in Austria on Friday, following a 2-0 defeat by VFL Bochum on Tuesday night.
