With Good Friday approaching, a taste test of battered cod from major supermarkets has been conducted to find the best option for a home 'chippy tea'. The test included fillets from Asda, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's, sampled with chips, peas, lemon and curry sauce.
Sainsbury's Battered MSC Cod Fillets (£4.50 for two) impressed with moist, flaky fish and crispy batter after 20 minutes in the oven. The fish tasted fresh and fell apart in the mouth, earning high marks for replicating a chip shop experience.
Tesco's Battered Cod Fillets (£3.95 for two) offered generous fillets with the strongest fish taste. The light, crispy batter and non-greasy texture made it the closest to a traditional chippy, and it was rated the most enjoyable overall.
Asda's Battered Cod Fillets (£4.37 for four) were the most golden after cooking and reasonably priced, but the fish was less flavoursome and the fillets smaller. Aldi's Battered Cod (£3.39 for four) was the cheapest but suffered from soggy batter and the smallest fillets, though the fish was fresh.
The test concluded that for quality and value, Tesco and Sainsbury's are top choices, while Aldi and Asda offer budget-friendly alternatives with some compromises.
