Starbucks closes Brighton branch amid UK restructuring

Starbucks has permanently closed its outlet on Jubilee Street in Brighton, marking the second closure in the city in recent weeks. The coffee chain, which operates around 1,300 shops across the UK, served its final customers at the branch on October 4, with its green logo removed from the premises.

A notice on the door confirmed the closure and thanked customers for their support. It read: "Thank you to our community for your loyalty. This store will be closing on October 4, 2026." It added: "Your nearest stores are 25 St James's Street, Kemptown, Brighton, BN2 1RF, and 119 London Road, Brighton, BN1 4JH."

Chain confirms closure and staff redeployment

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed the closure, explaining that the company regularly reviews its network of stores. They said: "We regularly review our portfolio to ensure our stores are relevant for our customers. Our store on Jubilee Street, Brighton, permanently closed on October 4, and all partners (employees) have been redeployed to other Starbucks coffeehouses in the local area."

The spokesperson added: "We thank our customers for their loyalty over the years and invite them to find their nearest store using the Starbucks Store Locator."

Second closure in Brighton and Hove

The closure is the second Starbucks branch to shut in Brighton and Hove in recent weeks. In September, the chain confirmed that its Western Road branch in Hove would also close, with the outlet shutting in October.

The latest closures follow an announcement last year that Starbucks planned to shut several stores across the UK as part of a cost-saving restructuring programme amid slowing sales. The plans raised concerns over jobs, with employees at affected locations facing the prospect of redundancy.

Broader UK store closures continue

Another Starbucks branch on High Street in King's Lynn, Norfolk, closed on October 26, after serving customers in the town for 10 years. A notice displayed at the Norfolk store read: "Unfortunately, our store will cease trading on October 26. We would like to thank you all for your custom these past 10 years."

Starbucks executive Brian Niccol previously told employees that the company would close locations unable to "deliver a warm and welcoming space" or meet financial targets. The chain also said it planned to shut stores where it could not "create the physical environment customers" want and where they were not sustainably profitable.

Starbucks operates approximately 520 company-owned stores in the UK and employs more than 5,600 people. Despite the latest closure, customers in Brighton can still visit the chain's remaining outlets, including those on St James's Street and London Road.
