A special indoor market is set to return to Liverpool city centre during this year's River of Light festival, following a successful three-night run last year. The 2026 market has been extended to eight nights.
Market details and opening times
Around 35 stalls will be set up at the Cunard Building each evening, featuring local independent traders selling products such as tasty treats, art and craft, bespoke jewellery, and exclusive gifts. The market is free to enter, with access via the Strand entrance and an accessible entrance available at the Brunswick Street side.
The market will run daily from 4pm to 9pm from Friday, October 23 to Friday, October 30. The Cunard Building, which is on the River of Light trail, will also host an artwork titled Coloured Peonies.
Councillor's comments
Councillor Harry Doyle said: “River of Light is a highlight of our cultural calendar and one the whole family can enjoy. Following a successful debut last year, for 2026 we have extended the market, giving people the opportunity to buy from independent traders and perhaps purchase an early Christmas present.”
“In addition to this, you can also combine a visit with a behind the scenes tour of Cunard Building, to learn more about the fascinating history of one of the world-famous Three Graces.”
“By timing the market and the tours with the festival, we’re creating an even richer visitor experience that combines Liverpool’s history, culture, and creativity. It gives people the chance to immerse themselves in the heritage that has helped shape Liverpool’s internationally recognised waterfront.”
Festival expansion
The free light art festival is set to return from Friday, October 23 until Thursday, November 1. Delivered by Culture Liverpool, the theme of this year's festival is ‘Together’, with all installations focusing on how light brings people closer in a joyful way.
Eleven installations have been revealed ahead of the 2026 edition, including POP! By Gentilhomme, Dream Herd by Amigo and Amigo, and Loop by Olivier Girourd and Jonathan Villeneuve. The festival will expand into new locations across the city, including Williamson Square and St Paul’s Square, with Culture Liverpool partnering with Liverpool Accommodation BID.
Annie Brown, general manager at Gallery and Chair of the Accommodation BID, said: “River of Light is exactly the kind of event that makes Liverpool such a great place to visit, and it has a really important role to play in supporting our city centre economy.”
“It brings significant footfall into the city at a time when we want to encourage people to visit, stay longer and experience everything Liverpool has to offer. For our accommodation businesses, events like this are a fantastic opportunity to drive overnight stays, giving visitors another reason to book a hotel, extend their trip and spend more time in the city. That increased footfall also benefits restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions, creating a positive ripple effect across the wider city centre.”
