Self-heating blanket keeps you warm with no electricity costs

The Silentnight Heat Genie Self Heating Giant Blanket keeps you warm without any electricity or running costs, making it a practical option as energy bills rise. Priced between £34.99 and £39.99 depending on colour, the blanket uses a built-in heat-reflecting foil layer to bounce your natural body warmth back at you.

With Ofgem announcing a 4% rise in the price cap, cutting electricity costs has become more important. Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has previously backed the idea of warming the person rather than the property, suggesting hot water bottles and oversized jumpers as alternatives to radiators.

Large and cosy design

The blanket measures 180cm x 240cm, making it big enough for several people or pets to share. Its outer layer is a smooth plush fabric, while the interior features an ultra-soft sherpa fleece lining that fits easily into most lounges or bedrooms.

Despite the foil layer inside, the blanket remains supple, pliable and silent, with no rustling noise. It is available from Amazon in leopard print, khaki, natural and burgundy, although it was only sold in grey when first purchased.

Warmth without a switch

Testing the blanket for several hours showed it retains heat exceptionally well, creating a distinct cosy barrier warmer than a regular throw. Unlike an electric blanket, the temperature cannot be controlled with a switch, but the lack of running costs makes this a reasonable trade-off.

The blanket does not provide the immediate warmth of an electric option. Alternatives include the StaySnug Sherpa Electric Heated Throw from Lakeland at £54.99 and the Slumberdown Comfy Hugs Electric Blanket Heated Throw, reduced to £27.58 from £45.99 at Debenhams, which has nine temperature settings and is machine washable.

Machine washable and pet-friendly

The Silentnight Heat Genie can be placed directly in the washing machine and dries quickly, so pet fur is not a problem. The blanket has replaced a previous throw because it keeps the user considerably toastier without adding to the electricity bill.
