A cherished Scottish bakery has expanded its presence across Glasgow with a new location in the heart of the city, conveniently situated for busy travellers.
New Branch at Central Station
Bayne's the Family Bakers announced earlier this year it would open a shop on Gordon Street, directly across from Glasgow Central Station. The unit officially opened on June 16, creating 18 jobs for the local area.
This marks the family-run bakery firm's eighth location in Glasgow and its 71st in Scotland overall. Founded in Fife over 70 years ago, Bayne's has expanded significantly across the country, primarily serving the central belt in areas including Edinburgh, Dundee, Perthshire, and Glasgow.
Award-Winning Morning Rolls
The much-loved bakery is famed for its morning rolls, which have been made using the same slow-fermented recipe for more than 70 years. The new Gordon Street opening is part of the baker's strategic expansion into high footfall areas and aims to meet growing customer demand for fresh baking.
Alongside new openings, Bayne's launched its first mobile app in 2025. The free loyalty scheme offers freebies based on stamps collected, with a hot drink provided after six stamps.
History and Growth
First opened in 1954, Bayne's The Family Bakers was founded by John Bayne in Lochore, Fife, as a small shop selling quality meat to the local mining community. After facing supermarket competition, Bayne's son Stanley expanded the bakery side following the founder's death. Today, the chain operates more than 70 stores across Scotland.
Bayne's is popular for traditional, high-quality baking, including fresh morning rolls, hand-decorated cakes, and coffee. It has won numerous awards for its Scotch pies and savoury delicacies. In 2021, the first Bayne's Drive-Thru opened at Hillington Park, recognising the growing trend for convenience.
Strategic Investment
Bayne's Joint Managing Director, John Bayne, said: 'Glasgow continues to play an important role in our journey. The support we’ve received from communities across the city has been fantastic. Our newest location is all about meeting demand. Positioned just across from Glasgow Central Station, our Gordon Street shop offers commuters a convenient option for a hearty breakfast or post-work treat, whilst also providing fresh and traditionally baked options for those in the centre of town.'
This opening follows the announcement earlier this year of Bayne’s plans to invest £11 million in the business, with a wider goal to double its retail footprint and ensure the heritage brand remains a cherished staple in Scottish communities.
