Sayers Bakery, a well-known UK bakery chain, has announced it will close 19 of its shops across the country, putting around 100 jobs at risk. The closures are expected to take effect at the end of August 2026.
The company, which also operates under the Poundbakery brand, cited a reduction in high street foot traffic and rising business costs as reasons for the decision. Sayers has been trading for 114 years and currently employs about 800 people across its stores.
Closures Follow Portfolio Review
In a statement issued to The Liverpool Echo, the company confirmed that 19 locations, which have not yet been disclosed, will close. The statement said: "Following a comprehensive review of our store portfolio, the company has concluded that a number of locations are no longer commercially viable."
It added: "After careful consideration, the senior management has therefore proposed to close 19 underperforming shops at the end of August 2026, which is expected to result in approx. 100 redundancies out of 800 employees within the company."
Impact on Remaining Stores
The company said it aims to safeguard the future of the business by focusing on its remaining 72 shops and protecting approximately 700 jobs. The statement continued: "Our focus is safeguarding the future of the business, investing in our remaining 72 shops and protecting approx. 700 jobs while preserving our place on the high street, where we have been for 114 years."
This latest round of closures follows a similar move last August, when the retail group announced the closure of its stores in Aintree, West Kirby, and Widnes. Sayers operates more than 20 shops across Merseyside and nearly 24 nationwide.
