Curiosity about whether premium supermarket berries justify their higher cost led me to compare Sainsbury's Taste the Difference British Strawberries with standard ones. The Taste the Difference punnet was priced at £2.75 on a Nectar 3-for-2 offer, while the standard pack cost £2.25 on a Nectar Price. Both had the same best-before date and originated from different UK farms.
Class and Quality Differences
The standard strawberries were classified as Class 1, typical for good supermarket fruit. The Taste the Difference berries were graded as extra class, indicating flawless, premium produce. The packaging claimed they are "hand selected, perfectly ripe, sweet and juicy."
Taste Test Results
Visually, the two punnets looked similar except for a few rogue leaves in the cheaper one. However, the eating experience differed. The premium strawberries were perfectly ripe with more structure, offering a slight crunch when bitten. The standard berries were softer and nearly melted in the mouth, though both were juicy, sweet, and refreshing.
Nectar Prices Offer Details
Sainsbury's is running a 3-for-2 mix-and-match offer on selected Taste the Difference berries and cherries from June 24 to July 14. Shoppers can choose three from British strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or cherries, with the cheapest item free. Richard Crampton, Sainsbury’s Commercial Director for Fresh and Convenience, said: “British berries are one of the real highlights of the season and this offer is a brilliant way for customers to enjoy exceptional taste at great value. We work closely with specialist growers, with many on a long-term basis, to bring customers fruit selected for sweetness, juiciness and flavour, with all our Taste the Difference strawberries and raspberries sourced from UK farms.”
Swavory Summer Salad Recipe
Sainsbury's also released a "swavory" salad recipe incorporating summer berries. Ingredients include Taste the Difference berries, crumbled Greek Feta, mixed salad leaves, and walnut halves. The vinaigrette uses extra virgin olive oil, cider vinegar, Canadian maple syrup, Dijon mustard, finely chopped echalion shallots, salt, and cracked black pepper. Sainsbury's recommends keeping the vinaigrette separate and leaves in their bag until serving to maintain freshness.
