Randy's Donuts to open first UK shop in Edinburgh

Randy's Donuts, one of America's most famous doughnut chains, is set to make its UK debut more than 70 years after opening its first shop. The company has submitted a planning application to Edinburgh City Council for its first British location.

First UK location in Edinburgh

The chain's first British shop looks set to open in Edinburgh, with plans to move into a former Barburrito restaurant on Forrest Road. The site is near the University of Edinburgh and the National Museum of Scotland, with the Royal Mile also within walking distance.

Plans submitted to the council include changes to the outside of the building and an illuminated Randy's Donuts logo. An exact opening date has not yet been revealed, although the company's website lists its Edinburgh location as "coming soon".

History and expansion

Randy's Donuts opened its first shop in Inglewood, California in 1952 and has since expanded across the US and overseas. The brand is perhaps best known for the giant doughnut above its original shop, which has become a Los Angeles landmark and has appeared on screen over the years, including in the 2010 film Iron Man 2.

The chain sells a huge selection of doughnuts alongside coffee, cold drinks and breakfast sandwiches. Randy's now has more than 30 locations across the US as well as shops in countries including South Korea, the Philippines, Japan and Mexico.

UK expansion plans

Mark Kelegian, owner and CEO of Randy's Donuts, said: "We are thrilled to announce that Randy's Donuts is coming to the UK. We are confident that out unique brand and delicious doughnuts will be a hit with UK customers, as it has been in Asia, the Middle East and the USA."

The Edinburgh store would be Randy's Donuts' first location in the UK and its first step into the European market. The company has also been looking for franchise partners as it prepares to expand into Britain, although no UK partner has yet been publicly named. There is also no confirmation yet of how many stores the American chain could eventually open across the country.
