Next is set to close its 14,000 sq ft store at Clarks Village in Somerset on October 17, ending a presence at the outlet village that has lasted more than two decades. The fashion and homeware retailer has operated from the site since 2003, when it opened as the largest Next outlet store in the UK.
Planned return in 2027
Shoppers have been reassured that the closure will not be permanent. Next is currently expected to return to Clarks Village at a new location in spring 2027, according to a spokesperson for the shopping destination.
The spokesperson said: "I’ve confirmed with the team that the current Next store is due to close to the public on 17 October; however, it’s currently positioned to return to Clarks Village at a new location in Spring 2027."
Shopper concerns and petition
The impending closure has prompted a petition calling for the store to be saved, with signatories warning that losing Next could reduce footfall at Clarks Village and have a knock-on effect on other businesses there. The petition also argues the retailer is particularly important for families buying seasonal clothing.
One shopper commented: "NEXT has always been a family favourite store in Clarks village and offers such good quality clothes for amazing prices. The store also helps save clothes from the landfill."
Other comments raised concerns about the wider mix of retailers at the destination, pointing to the loss of Radley and Barbour, as well as changes to the centre's indoor bedding, china and glassware offering. One shopper warned: "If we lose many more, others will pull out as they won't get the footfall. So let's save Next and fill the empty stores!"
Gap in service
The shopping destination has not yet revealed where the replacement store will be located or confirmed the exact date it will open. While Next is expected to return in spring 2027, its October closure means shoppers could be without the retailer at the outlet village for several months.
