The Charles Grey pub in Newcastle is set to reopen under a new name, with 'coming soon' signs appearing outside the building confirming the venue will be called The Earl Grey Townhouse.
The signs reveal the venue will operate as a bar, serve food and have its own wine cellar. A website linked on the signage offers limited details at present, but includes an application link for those interested in working there.
A Monument favourite returns
The Charles Grey, a long-standing fixture of Newcastle's food and drink scene, closed its doors in September last year. Known for serving pints, pub grub and hosting quizzes, the pub was a familiar stop for both locals and visitors. It also survived the Covid pandemic, operating an outdoor hut selling drinks such as mulled wine during the Tier system restrictions before a second nationwide lockdown began in early 2021.
Speculation about the venue's future had been rife in the months after closure, with a dedicated thread on Reddit emerging as people sought answers.
New branding and nearby developments
An Instagram account for The Earl Grey Townhouse was set up earlier this month, with the first post reading: 'The Earl Grey, your soon to be favourite city centre townhouse and wine cellar.'
The Monument area is also set for other developments, with Grey Street due to host the first Ivy restaurant in Newcastle. Plans are in place to convert the former Lloyds bank building into a branch of the celebrity-frequented venue.
