The multi-million pound Hard Rock Cafe in Newcastle remains empty almost 18 months after it closed suddenly, with no plans yet for the building's future.
Historic Guildhall venue
The venue occupies the historic Guildhall on the Quayside, which was transformed into the world-famous brand after ambitious plans were approved. It opened in 2021 to considerable curiosity and excitement, given Hard Rock's loyal global following.
Like its counterparts worldwide, the Newcastle bar and restaurant displayed stage outfits from music icons, including costumes worn by Amy Winehouse, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift. It also ran its own merchandise shop, open to non-diners, which stocked several limited edition Newcastle products.
Sudden closure in March 2025
As well as food and drink, the Hard Rock Cafe regularly hosted live music performances. Given its high profile and prime location on the banks of the River Tyne, its sudden closure in March 2025 came as a shock. Employees working at the time said they had no indication it was coming.
It later emerged that the Newcastle franchise collapsed with debts of more than £2.6m, and staff found themselves swiftly out of work.
No plans for the future
Now, the Hard Rock looks no different from how it did when doors shut 18 months ago. As things stand, there are no plans for it to re-open, or for anything else to move into the building.
The bar's fate was highlighted this week after the man behind the popular Facebook page The Great British Pub Crawl visited Newcastle and shared a photo of the Hard Rock Cafe with the account's 258,000 followers.
One reply said: "The Guildhall is a wonderful historic building that should never have obtained planning permission to become a restaurant or any other sort of permanent hospitality venue. Tyneside & Northumberland CAMRA held their first beer festivals there."
