Midsommar Bakery in Newcastle's Grainger Market has been overwhelmed by customer support since announcing its closure last week, with the shop selling out of food every day.
Overwhelming response
Staff at the Scandinavian bakery said they have been 'blown away' by the level of support from customers since the news broke. The bakery, which opened at the end of 2025, has seen such high demand that it has been selling out of food daily.
Founders Nathalie, a Swedish foodie, and Ben, a Geordie, brought their successful food venture to the city centre, offering Swedish fika—the tradition of taking a break to enjoy coffee and sweet treats. Customers were invited to 'follow the smells of cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and coffee to find yourself a little slice of Scandinavian goodness.'
Final days of trading
The bakery announced it would close on Saturday, August 8, with a social media statement explaining: 'Unfortunately, times are tough for small businesses and we've faced challenges we simply can't overcome sustainably. After a great deal of thought, we know this is the right decision even if it's a painful one.'
Since the announcement, customers have flocked to the bakery, ensuring brisk trade in its final days. In a Facebook post, Midsommar said: 'Well what a week! You've come out in droves, shown incredible support and love for what we do, and we've sold out around 2pm every day. Next week is our last and we are guessing that it will be much the same. The cardamom buns are always the first to go, so make sure you come early to grab yours.'
