Newcastle Airport in talks to reinstate scrapped Loganair routes

Newcastle Airport bosses are set to hold talks with alternative airlines to bring back scrapped destinations after Loganair announced it is cancelling two regular services. The Scottish airline this week confirmed it is halting services between Newcastle Airport and Southampton and Exeter, as part of moves to “support the long-term resilience of the airline”.

Flights end on October 24

Loganair’s flights to the two destinations will come to an end next week on October 24, meaning the operator now has just one service from the region – from Newcastle to Jersey. As customers affected by the withdrawal of the service were being contacted, Newcastle Airport bosses told of their disappointment in the news.

However, they are keen to get the routes back up and running under a different carrier.

A Newcastle Airport spokesperson said: “We have been informed that Loganair will not be operating its services from Newcastle Airport to Southampton and Exeter beyond 24th October 2026. This is disappointing news and we will be exploring opportunities with airlines to reinstate these routes where possible.”

Passengers react to route cuts

Readers also commented with their disappointment, with one saying: “I‘m surprised that Southampton has gone (especially at short notice) ... any chance of any other airline picking up the route?”

While another said: “Understand Exeter after summer months but Southampton, I’ve been flying there the last 24 years with different airlines and always busy joining my merchant ships.” A third pointed out: “We need Newcastle to Southampton to join cruises.”

Loganair’s history at Newcastle

Loganair started out in 1962 with just one aircraft but is now the UK’s largest regional airline. It officially began flying from Newcastle in 2019 and over the last seven years has offered flights to a host of destinations including Aberdeen, the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen and the Channel Islands destination, Guernsey.

Jersey will now be its sole destination from Newcastle, however, booking systems on the firm’s website show there are no bookable flights from Newcastle to the largest of the Channel Islands after October 18 until January 10, with the final flight on October 18 going via Southampton. The company has been asked if this schedule will be updated to add more flights, but has not yet responded.

A Loganair spokesperson said: “As part of our ongoing network reviews, we can confirm that our Newcastle–Southampton and Newcastle–Exeter services have been cancelled. We continually review our flying programme to ensure our network reflects customer demand and supports the long-term resilience of the airline.

"This enables us to focus our aircraft and resources where they can deliver the greatest benefit for customers and the communities we serve. Customers with affected bookings are being contacted directly with their available options.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their understanding as we continue to strengthen our wider network.”
