An M&S Too Good To Go Surprise Bag, bought for £3.80, contained bakery items worth £11.50 – nearly three times the price paid, according to a first-hand review.
Shopper Sophie Buchan, writing for the lifestyle section, paid the price of a coffee for the bag, which had a minimum value of £10.20. Despite initial disappointment at not receiving the iconic M&S cookies seen in other hauls, she found the contents still offered strong value.
What was inside the bag
The Surprise Bag included a Collection Crafted Nocellara and Kalamata Olive Sourdough (£3.50), a Collection Crafted Seeded Sourdough Baguette (£2.50), a Chocolate Twist (£1.50), two Six Seed Rolls (£1 each), and a Dunked N’ Loaded Matcha and Strawberry doughnut (£2), totalling £11.50.
To avoid waste, Buchan used the baguette alongside bone broth made from leftover chicken, and turned a roll into a bacon roll for breakfast. A TikTok commenter suggested turning the sourdough loaf into garlic bread and freezing it, which she did.
Value and verdict
Buchan concluded that with Too Good To Go, you don’t necessarily need to get exactly what you wanted to get your money’s worth. She said she would absolutely buy another bag, despite the lack of cookies, noting the bakery is nearby and she had recently enjoyed a pack of Gingerbread and White Chocolate cookies.
The partnership between M&S and Too Good To Go supports M&S’ wider Plan A goal to halve food waste by 2030 and ensure edible surplus food is eaten. Surprise Bag contents vary depending on bakery surplus available on the day, and specific products cannot be guaranteed. M&S confirms on its website: "Each of the Surprise Bags will include three to four bakery products to a minimum retail price of £10.20 for just £3.80."
Customers can order Surprise Bags through the Too Good To Go app and collect them Monday to Saturday, one hour before their local store closes.
