Marks & Spencer (M&S) will close its historic St Mary Street branch in Weymouth, Dorset, on Tuesday, July 14, ending a 93-year presence on the high street. The closure is part of the retailer's relocation strategy, with a new, larger store opening the following day at Weymouth Gateway Retail Park.
New Superstore to Open Immediately
The new 41,000 square-foot superstore, double the size of the existing branch, will open on Wednesday, July 15. It will feature a food hall, café, in-store bakery, and fashion, home, and beauty offerings. The move reflects M&S's strategy to modernise its estate and provide enhanced shopping experiences.
Local Reaction
The closure has disappointed some residents. One local told The Sun, "I really am quite sad, it's been part of my life since I was at college in Weymouth in the 70s. I like going in most days for bits and pieces." Another noted the inconvenience, saying they would need to take two buses to reach the new location.
Part of Broader Strategy
The relocation aligns with M&S's broader store renewal programme. The chain recently opened two new city centre full-line stores—one at Bath Southgate in February and another at Bristol's Cabot Circus last November. These moves aim to consolidate M&S's retail footprint while offering upgraded facilities.
