M&S Overhauls Sparks Loyalty Scheme with New Cash Rewards System
M&S Sparks Loyalty Scheme Shake-Up with Cash Rewards

M&S Announces Major Overhaul of Sparks Loyalty Programme

Marks & Spencer has unveiled a significant transformation of its Sparks loyalty scheme, shifting towards a system that provides shoppers with direct cash rewards. This strategic move aims to enhance customer engagement by offering more personalised and flexible benefits.

New Digital Wallet and Cash Earning Mechanism

The centrepiece of the revamp is the introduction of a new digital Sparks wallet, accessible exclusively through the M&S app. Shoppers will now be able to earn cash directly into this wallet by meeting specific spending thresholds across various product categories. The offers will be dynamically updated on a weekly basis, tailored to individual shopping patterns and preferences.

M&S has provided concrete examples of how these new rewards will work in practice. For instance, customers who spend £50 on fashion, home, and beauty products will receive £10 deposited into their Sparks wallet. Similarly, purchasing £30 worth of nightwear will yield a £6 reward. In the food department, spending £35 will add £5 to the wallet, while a £10 purchase on fresh fruit will earn £1 back.

Enhanced Rewards for Product Combinations and New Categories

Beyond category-specific spending, the updated scheme also incentivises purchasing selected items together. A notable example includes receiving £5 back when buying a bra and knickers combination. Additionally, Sparks members will earn money back when they venture into departments they don't typically shop in, encouraging exploration of M&S's broader product range.

Strategic Partnership with Virgin Red

In a significant expansion of the programme's reach, M&S has announced a new partnership with Virgin Red. This collaboration provides customers with additional avenues to boost their Sparks wallet balances through Virgin Group services. Examples include earning £130 when booking a Virgin Atlantic holiday and receiving £80 back when switching to Virgin Media. To access these benefits, customers must connect their Virgin Red account to their Sparks membership via the M&S app.

Retention of Popular Existing Perks

Despite the comprehensive changes, M&S has confirmed it will retain several beloved features of the original Sparks scheme based on customer feedback. These enduring benefits include:

  • Free birthday treats for members
  • The coffee stamps programme, offering a free drink after six purchases
  • Exclusive currency rates for international transactions
  • Discounts on various insurance policies
  • Continued support for the baby club and longstanding charity donations

Executive Commentary on the Transformation

Sharry Cramond, Marketing Director of Fashion, Home & Beauty and Loyalty at M&S, expressed enthusiasm about the new direction. "We are so excited to finally unveil the new Sparks - it's a complete step change in how we reward our customers," she stated.

"We've built this around exactly what they told us they want: simple, personalised offers and real money rewards that drop straight into their very own digital Sparks Wallet to spend at M&S however, whenever and on whatever they choose," Cramond explained.

She emphasised the customer-centric approach: "Sparks now puts our customers totally in control, rewarding them for buying the products they already love and giving them the opportunity to try new things and get rewarded for it. What's not to love!"

Regarding the balance between innovation and tradition, Cramond added: "And while we're transforming Sparks from the ground up, we've kept the much-loved treats customers told us matter to them - from free Birthday Treats and Coffee Stamps to our baby club and our longstanding charity donations - but more personal, more flexible and more rewarding than ever before. And this is just the start; there is so much more to come."

This overhaul represents M&S's latest effort to strengthen customer loyalty in an increasingly competitive retail landscape, combining technological innovation with personalised rewards while preserving the programme's most appreciated elements.
