Marks & Spencer's new Custard Cream spread has generated significant buzz, and one reviewer has given it a thumbs up—but with specific conditions. The spread transforms the classic British biscuit into an indulgent new form.
A Spread That Surprised the Reviewer
Brian Dillon, an Audience Writer, tried the spread after hearing about it. He is a big fan of custard cream biscuits, describing them as a staple that many have grown up indulging in. He noted that just because it's a traditional classic doesn't make it old and redundant, especially when it comes in a new form.
M&S already offers several innovative custard cream products, including a giant, chocolate-covered biscuit and smaller, coated delights that are ultra-sweet. However, none are as inventive as the new spread.
Texture and Taste: Rich and Sweet
Opening the spread, Dillon expected it to be thick and hard to spread. Instead, he found it easy to spread. M&S says it goes great on toast or waffles, but Dillon had other ideas.
The spread is rich, sweet, and creamy, with bits of biscuit dotted throughout. The texture experience is wonderful, but the taste, while rich, is incredibly sweet. Dillon concluded that it should not go on his toast in the morning.
Better on Scones or in Baking
Instead of toast, Dillon put the spread on a pancake, where it was a decent compliment. But his mind went elsewhere: a scone. He believes it would be the perfect topping, offering the creaminess of clotted cream and the sweetness of jam.
Some colleagues agreed, while a couple suggested it could be used for a twist on a classic Victoria sponge, replacing the cream and jam in the middle.
Dillon expects nobody will eat huge amounts in one sitting, as it is incredibly indulgent—one or two spoonfuls too much could easily become sickly. He recommends it for fans of custard creams and expects Biscoff spread fans to enjoy it too. While it won't go on his toast, it will be used for indulgent moments and may play a starring role in his next baking session.
