Morrisons Announces Closure of Rainham Store in July After Strategic Review
Morrisons has confirmed it will permanently close one of its UK branches this summer, describing the move as a difficult decision following a comprehensive strategic review. The Morrisons Daily outlet located at Parkwood Green Shopping Centre in Rainham, Kent, is scheduled to shut its doors for the final time on July 3, 2026.
Impact on Local Community and Elderly Shoppers
The announcement has sparked disappointment among local residents, with many expressing concern that the closure will disproportionately affect elderly members of the community. Several shoppers have voiced their shock and sadness, warning that the loss of this convenient local store will create significant hardship for those who rely on it for their daily essentials.
One regular customer remarked: "Parkwood won't be the same without that place." Another shopper emphasized: "It's the elderly that will suffer the loss the most." These sentiments highlight the vital role the store plays in the local area, particularly for those with limited mobility or transportation options.
Alternative Shopping Options and Employee Support
Following the closure, customers will need to travel to alternative Morrisons Daily stores located on Luton Road and Admiral Walk in nearby Chatham. Additionally, larger Morrisons supermarkets in Walderslade and Strood remain available as shopping destinations for affected residents.
A Morrisons spokesperson stated: "As part of our commitment to improving our competitiveness and delivering the best value for our customers, we regularly review all parts of our operation. Following a strategic review, we have made the difficult decision to close our Morrisons Daily store at Parkwood Green."
The company has emphasized that supporting affected employees is now their primary priority. The spokesperson added: "We will be working hard to ensure that as many of them as possible are offered alternative employment at a nearby Morrisons store. We remain committed to serving the local community through our other nearby locations."
Broader Context of Morrisons Store Closures
This closure follows a pattern of recent reductions in Morrisons' store portfolio. Last year, the supermarket chain shut 17 of its smaller Morrisons Daily stores throughout the United Kingdom. In total, 103 Morrisons sites ceased trading in 2025, including cafés, florists, and pharmacies that were part of their broader retail operations.
The company has previously explained that such closures become unavoidable when "costs of operations are significantly out of line with usage, volumes, or the value that customers place on them." Chief executive Rami Baitieh commented at the time: "A minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option."
Contrasting Business Strategies
Interestingly, this closure announcement comes just days after Morrisons revealed it would be cutting prices on popular products that regularly feature in weekly shopping baskets. This price reduction initiative forms part of the supermarket's continued pledge to offer better value to customers across its remaining store network, highlighting the company's dual approach of optimizing its physical footprint while enhancing competitiveness in pricing.
The closure of the Rainham store represents another step in Morrisons' ongoing strategic realignment as the supermarket chain navigates the challenging retail landscape while attempting to balance community service with commercial viability.
