Morrisons Crowned Cheapest for Easter Dinner, Beating Discount Rivals
Morrisons Cheapest for Easter Dinner, Beats Aldi and Lidl

A new financial study has uncovered the most affordable supermarket for a traditional Easter dinner, with surprising results that challenge common assumptions about budget retailers. As families across the UK prepare for the holiday weekend, the research provides crucial insights for cost-conscious shoppers seeking to celebrate without overspending.

Morrisons Emerges as the Value Champion

In an unexpected turn, Morrisons has been crowned the cheapest supermarket for a complete Easter dinner for four people, with a total cost of just £16.31. This finding comes from a comprehensive survey conducted by finance experts at Fast Loan UK, who analysed prices for essential ingredients including a 1kg half leg of lamb, potatoes, carrots, petit pois, parsnips, gravy, and mint sauce.

The study revealed that Morrisons secured the top spot primarily due to its competitively priced lamb, which costs £10.33 per kilogram. This key ingredient often represents the largest portion of the meal's expense, making Morrisons' offering particularly advantageous for households looking to manage their budgets effectively during the festive period.

Discount Supermarkets Fall Short

Contrary to popular belief, discount giants Aldi and Lidl did not claim the cheapest overall basket. Aldi placed third with a total cost just 25 pence more than second-place Asda, while Lidl did not feature in the top three. The research highlights that while these retailers may excel on individual items, their overall meal costs can be higher when factoring in all components.

Joe Brunt, a Consumer Finance Expert at Fast Loan UK, commented on the findings: "With food prices still a concern for many households, seasonal meals like Easter dinner can quickly become more expensive than people expect. Our research shows that while discount supermarkets are often assumed to be the cheapest overall, that isn’t always the case once you look at the full basket of ingredients."

Detailed Price Breakdown and Comparisons

The survey provided a detailed analysis of how each supermarket performed across different items. Asda came in second place, with its Easter dinner costing £1.58 more than Morrisons at £17.89. The primary driver of this difference was Asda's lamb, priced at £12.07 per kilogram—£1.74 more expensive than Morrisons' offering.

Aldi, despite its reputation for low prices, saw its total cost impacted by lamb priced at £12.99 per kilogram. However, the budget retailer did outperform Morrisons on several individual items, including petit pois, carrots, and mint sauce, demonstrating that selective shopping could yield additional savings.

At the premium end of the spectrum, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer were identified as the most expensive options, with only a 10 pence difference between them. Again, the cost of lamb was the significant differentiator, underscoring the importance of comparing prices on this central component.

Strategic Shopping for Maximum Savings

The research further revealed that shoppers could achieve even greater savings by purchasing specific items from different supermarkets. By combining Morrisons' lamb with Aldi's potatoes, gravy, mint sauce, and parsnips, and adding Lidl's carrots (priced at 79 pence for 1.5kg), the total cost for an Easter dinner for four could be reduced to £15.83.

Brunt emphasised this strategy: "The biggest price differences tend to come from the main item on the plate, such as lamb, so shoppers who want to keep costs down may benefit from comparing prices on key ingredients rather than assuming one supermarket will be the cheapest for everything."

This approach not only maximises value but also reflects the evolving shopping habits of consumers who are increasingly willing to visit multiple stores to optimise their budgets. As Easter approaches, these insights offer practical guidance for families aiming to enjoy a traditional meal without financial strain, highlighting that thorough research and flexible shopping can lead to significant cost reductions.
