Morrisons has become the latest supermarket to release its Christmas advert, offering a cute reimagining of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The festive campaign follows a flurry of ad launches over the past week.
The advert shows Mummy and Daddy Bear's frantic preparations after a last-minute text from Baby Bear reading: "Home for Xmas! Bringing someone xx". Daddy Bear is sent to Morrisons for the food shop, where he struggles to free his trolley from the line and gets on all fours to admire the delights of the deli counter, while Mummy Bear decorates the tree, taking a quick break to scratch her back on its branches.
Baby Bear's Surprise Guest
Nothing can prepare the Bear family for Baby Bear's arrival, when he is at the door with his new girlfriend, Goldilocks. The Bear family do not scare their guest away and instead welcome her at their table, where "Goldie" jokes that the meal is "a bit too hot for me".
The supermarket explained that it wanted to lure customers in with the traditional classic 19th-century fairytale and hopes it will be a winner with viewers. "Everyone has their own idea of what makes Christmas 'just right' alongside their own family traditions that make the day feel truly magical," said Beverley Lumb, marketing and advertising director at Morrisons.
"As Christmas comes in all shapes and sizes, we pride ourselves on delivering good, honest value, ensuring every piece of festive fare is crafted with the thought, care and quality for everyone gathered around your table."
Other Supermarket Campaigns
This year's John Lewis Christmas advert landed on Monday and features Slow Horses star Dame Kristin Scott Thomas as grandmother Gloria, who is trying to find the perfect gift for her grandchildren. Gloria, with the help of Pickles the dog and a vintage Little Snoopy Pull Along Toy voiced by comedian Paul Whitehouse, decides against giving out envelopes of cash. She and Pickles then head to a John Lewis branch.
As the family arrives on Christmas Day, Gloria presents her grandchildren with a key to a room transformed into a 'Gran Cave', complete with sparkling lights, disco balls and a record player. The children, Freddie, played by EastEnders actor Jahsaiah Williams, and sister Maggie, give their grandmother a huge hug before the advert ends with them dancing in the makeshift den together. John Lewis says this year's campaign has been made with the cost-of-living crisis in mind, as all items in Gloria's fun room have either been recycled from elsewhere in her house or cost less than £100.
Lidl has wheeled out Shaun Williamson, known for his role as Barry from EastEnders, in its new campaign titled Lidl Christmas Everybody, where he leads a festive singalong. Sainsbury's also dropped its ad, which saw the return of the BFG, the iconic children's character from Roald Dahl's classic novel.
The Sainsbury's advert begins with the BFG feeling poorly and in need of assistance. Upon admitting he will "miss Christmas this year", the Sainsbury's team springs into action, with real-life staff member Annie leading a bold, high-speed delivery mission to ensure her giant friend can still celebrate the festive season, accompanied by her trusty sidekick Fred. Their venture into Giant Country is far from plain sailing, as the duo must dodge enormous Squizzly Scotch-Hoppers and outsmart a ravenous Greedy Giant along the way. Ultimately, the pair succeed in reaching the BFG's decorated cave, laden with treats for him to savour.
Gazing down at his friend, the BFG remarks: "Annie? You came all this way just for me?" With a warm smile, Annie gently reminds him, "Nobody should miss Christmas." The advert culminates in a touching scene as the three companions gather for a festive feast inside the BFG's home, ending with Sainsbury's pledge: "For everything that makes Christmas unmissable. Sainsbury's, good food for all of us."
