Millennials' Home Turn-Ons: Clean Sheets and Tidy Homes Lead

A survey by Lakeland has revealed the home touches that millennials find most attractive, with clean bedding, tidy homes and 'proper' pans among the unexpected turn-ons.

A freshly made bed with clean bedding topped the list with 34%, followed by a tidy home at 29%, while a quarter (23%) found a spotless kitchen appealing, according to the study of 2,000 Brits.

The research also highlighted a well-stocked fridge, organised drawers and kitchen, proper pan sets, matching storage containers and homemade barista-style coffee as factors that excite homeowners.

Brits reportedly begin to find home organisation exciting at age 34, possibly due to increased awareness of preferences, more disposable income and routine compared with their twenties.

Staying In Over Going Out

The survey found 44% of Brits preferred staying in to heading out for dinner and drinks, while 41% said staying in feels more exciting now than five years ago. One in three (29%) millennials get immense satisfaction from cooking a meal from scratch.

Spending on homeware varies by age: 25-34-year-olds spend an average of £68.81 monthly, 18-24-year-olds £59.84, and over-65s £14.26.

Lakeland's New Collection

Matt Elliott, head of marketing at Lakeland, said: "It’s interesting to see millennials embracing so many of the things we might traditionally associate with getting older." He added: "There seems to be a real shift in what we consider a good time with staying in, cooking something nice and enjoying our homes increasingly competing with the appeal of going out."

Elliott noted that practical items like an organised kitchen or a good set of pans are increasingly appreciated investments, and can make great gifts. The research accompanies Lakeland's new Autumn/Winter collection and 'Spend Smarter' campaign, which offers quality homeware at competitive prices.
