McVitie's is about to launch a 'seriously moreish' twist on a classic. When it comes to British food debates, there's almost no topic so fiercely contentious as that of the Jaffa Cake. Is it a biscuit? Or a cake? The question has been dividing the nation since McVitie's launched them almost 100 years ago, in 1927. Personally, if you ask me, it's neither. This iconic snack is so special that it's deserving of its own dictionary definition.
Now, though, the brand has pioneered another product that, again, doesn't definitively count as either a biscuit or a cake…if we're being technical about it. Enter: the Jaffa Cookie. Dubbed a 'seriously moreish twist' on a classic, it takes the Jaffa Cake concept and runs with it. It's comprised of a soft-baked chocolate chip cookie, which has then been half-dipped in milk chocolate. Of course, there's a tangy orange centre to give it that familiar chocolate orange taste.
A spokesperson at McVitie's Jaffa Cakes said of the launch: 'Everyone loves a Jaffa Cake, everyone loves a cookie, and Jaffa Cookies bring together the best of both worlds. It's the iconic Jaffa flavour people know and love, wrapped up in a soft-baked cookie that's perfect for those moments when only a cookie will do. Although this one really can be dunked.'
The product has launched exclusively in Asda Express stores to begin with, where you can pick up a packet for £2.50. It'll be rolled out across Asda stores nationwide on June 25, while other big supermarket names will start stocking it from July 20.
If you're big on the chocolate orange combination, you'll be pleased to know this isn't the only Jaffa Cake product McVitie's has spun out lately. You can also now get a Jaffa Cake-Digestive hybrid. The product has a classic Digestives wheatmeal biscuit base, with an orange-flavour caramel on top and a milk chocolate flavour coating.
Elsewhere, the biscuit brand has launched a brand-new flavour: White Chocolate Hobnobs. Decades in the making, it pretty much does what it says on the tin, as it's the classic, oaty cookie we all know and love, coated with a healthy dose of white chocolate on the top, rather than the classic milk or dark. They're now available in Morrison's, and they'll start appearing in other supermarkets from July 13 onwards. They'll cost you around £2.25 a pop for a 232g pack.
There's more, too. McVitie's has also unveiled Penguin Bites, which are baked snack crackers that come in three flavours. Shaped like little penguins, you'll be able to choose between lightly salted, cheese, or salt and vinegar options. They're priced at £2 for a 125g box, and are now stocked in major grocery retailers across the UK.
