Matalan Announces Store Closures in Colne and Carlisle with Major Sale
Fashion and homeware retailer Matalan has confirmed the permanent closure of two of its stores, located in Colne, Lancashire, and Carlisle, with both shutdowns scheduled for March 7. In response, the company is launching a substantial 50% discount sale across a wide range of products, offering shoppers final opportunities to purchase items at reduced prices before the doors close for good.
Details of the Closures and Impact on Shoppers
The Colne store, situated at North Valley Retail Park, will cease operations next week, with customers advised that visits will no longer be possible after the closure date. Similarly, the Carlisle megastore is set to shut on the same day as part of a broader redevelopment initiative. This project aims to transform the retail park into a new southern entrance for Carlisle station, reflecting ongoing changes in urban infrastructure and retail landscapes.
A spokesperson for Matalan emphasized the company's commitment to supporting affected colleagues during this transition. "Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Accrington or Blackburn stores," the spokesperson stated. This move follows the recent closure of the Leeds store on February 24, where staff were successfully redeployed to other locations.
Strategic Investments and Future Plans
Despite these closures, Matalan is not scaling back its presence in the UK retail market. The retailer has outlined ambitious plans for 2026, including the refurbishment of 40 stores as part of a continued investment strategy. Last year, Matalan completed 30 store upgrades under a £25 million investment programme, with these refurbished sites reportedly outperforming the wider network by an impressive 14% in sales performance.
With over 200 stores operating across the United Kingdom after four decades in business, Matalan remains a significant player in the fashion and homeware sector. The company's focus on enhancing existing locations through refurbishments suggests a strategic shift towards optimising performance rather than solely expanding its physical footprint. This approach aligns with broader industry trends where retailers are increasingly prioritising store quality and customer experience over sheer numbers of outlets.
The closures in Colne and Carlisle, while impactful locally, are part of Matalan's broader adjustment to market conditions and urban development projects. Shoppers in affected areas are encouraged to take advantage of the 50% off sale while stocks last, and to explore alternative Matalan stores in nearby towns for future purchases. As the retail landscape evolves, Matalan's investments in refurbishments indicate a proactive stance towards maintaining competitiveness and driving growth in a challenging economic environment.
