Shoppers looking for a bargain this summer may have noticed a striking similarity between a discounted suitcase at Matalan and a far pricier option at John Lewis. The high street chain, which has more than 200 stores across the UK, is offering the IT Luggage Black Navigator Hard Suitcase in three sizes, with every variant currently reduced.
The Large suitcase is now £40, down from £50, the Medium has dropped to £32 from £40, and the Cabin version is reduced to £28 from £35. Matalan describes the case as 'sleek', 'sturdy' and 'superior', adding that it features a tough hard shell exterior and smooth wheel control for easy manoeuvrability.
However, customers may notice a distinct likeness to the Jumbo 3-Piece Luggage Set sold at John Lewis, which retails at £210 but is currently out of stock. Both products are made by the same brand, IT Luggage, and share a similar black hard-shell design, with the main difference being the placement of the logo.
Despite the visual similarities, there are notable differences in dimensions and weight. John Lewis's large case offers a more generous 153-litre capacity but weighs in at 5.31kg, while Matalan's large option is lighter at 4.63kg with a 122-litre capacity. This pattern continues across the set, with John Lewis providing larger capacities for its medium (100 litres versus 80 litres) and cabin (39 litres versus 34 litres) sizes.
Matalan's cases, however, are lighter and more streamlined, which could make them a more practical choice for travellers wanting to avoid excess baggage charges. Both options are available to view on their respective websites, with home delivery offered.
