A man who purchased lunch from a shop at Gatwick Airport has expressed his dismay after the total came to a staggering sum. Carmie Sellitto documented his shopping spree at the airport's WH Smith branch ahead of an 18-hour flight, sharing the experience on Instagram.
The Shopping Expedition
In the video, Sellitto began: 'I need to buy a bunch of snacks that will last me the 18 hours, but for some reason this place is so expensive and I have no idea why.' He grabbed a basket and proceeded to the aisles, picking up a packet of dried mangoes priced at £6.
He continued: 'I've picked up some sweet chilli rice crackers and I'm going to go for some luxury nut and raisin mix. The fact that that's probably going to be £20 already is actually a bit disgusting.'
Confectionery Costs
Carmie expressed astonishment at the £5 label on a large bag of Haribo Tangfastics, questioning who would pay £10 for a giant pack of Mentos mints or £14 for a Chupa Chups lollipop. He then showcased £18 boxes of Ferrero Rochers, declining to purchase one, instead opting for a watermelon-flavoured Push Pop and Smints.
'I've got to go for a Reese's White Cup,' he added, 'And I'll get some Galaxy Minstrels.' For drinks, he took advantage of a three-for-two offer on Actiph Water bottles and picked up Rennie for potential heartburn on the flight.
Reduced packets of Cheez-Its and 20% off Cadbury Dairy Milk Biscoff bars were welcome surprises. He also selected Snack a Jacks, Proper Popcorn, strawberry Vitamin Well, and a Cadbury & More Nutty Praline Crisp bar.
The Reveal
Heading to the self-checkout, Carmie declared: 'I think we're done. And now what you've all been waiting for. How much did I spend? I spent £58.70. Let me know if you think that's worth it. I can’t believe how much I spent.'
Reactions on Instagram included a user joking: 'Probably cheaper to fly first class!' Another commented: 'That’s why I mainly take my own snacks. But I do like a Boots meal deal at the airport.' A third pointed out: 'You bought four drinks, I thought drinks are included on a long haul flight.' A fourth exclaimed: 'Omg no it’s not worth it. You could’ve bought all the snacks before you went to the airport. Which would have probably cost you about £20.'
WH Smith and Gatwick Airport were contacted for comment.
