Woolworths has introduced a charge of up to $1.50 for mesh bags used for fruits and vegetables, replacing the previously free plastic produce bags. The move, part of a trial in Western Australia, has drawn criticism from customers who see it as a profit-driven measure.
A Reddit user shared a photo of a sign announcing the fee, captioned with expletive-laden frustration. The trial, underway in 12 stores across WA, offers a three-pack of reusable mesh bags for 30 cents, discounted from $1.50. Woolworths has already banned single-use plastic produce bags in South Australia.
Shoppers expressed anger online, with one commenting, 'This is where their next billion profit is made.' Others pointed out the irony of Woolworths charging for mesh bags while continuing to sell pre-packaged produce in plastic. Some suggested alternatives like using freezer bags or going bagless.
Woolworths confirmed the trial is to prepare for a Western Australian government ban on single-use plastic fruit and veg bags, effective March next year. A spokeswoman said the trial offers customers the option to go bagless, bring their own bags, or purchase reusable mesh bags.
The new charge comes shortly after Woolworths reported a $1.62 billion full-year profit, up 4.6% from the previous year. The company says the switch could divert up to 70 tonnes of plastic waste from landfill annually.
