Liverpool's Best Fish and Chip Shop Named - Not in City Centre

The Good Catch in Freshfield is the only Liverpool establishment to make the National Fish and Chip Awards longlist for 2027, placing it among the top 40 fish and chip shops in the UK. The shop, located next to Freshfield Train Station and a short walk from Formby Beach, is now in contention to be crowned the best in the country.

The longlist features 40 chippies selected from thousands across the UK, judged on food quality, customer service, industry expertise, and commitment to sustainability. The top 40 will be narrowed to 20, then 10, before the ultimate winners are announced.

A Family-Run Favourite in the Suburbs

The Good Catch is a family-run business owned by siblings Alison, Chris, Michelle, and Rob. It serves haddock, cod, plaice, scampi, calamari, squid, pies, and salt and pepper options, with outdoor seating available.

One customer wrote: "Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had and the staff were polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend it." Another added: "Really good old-fashioned English chippy. Reasonable prices and always good food – I've been at least 10 times in the past 6 months and never had a below-standard meal."

What Winning Could Mean

Winning the top prize could be transformative for a hidden gem like The Good Catch. Aman Dhesi, co-owner of The Scrap Box in York, Yorkshire, the current Takeaway of the Year titleholder, described the impact as a "huge boost" for his business.

Dhesi said: "For those in the top 40, I'd say enjoy the process and make the most of it. The awards journey really makes you look closely at your own business - what you do well, what makes you different and where you can still improve. We learned a huge amount through the process before we ever won. And don't try to second-guess what the judges want. Be proud of what makes your shop yours and tell that story."

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) organises the awards, and 2027 marks the 39th edition. The competition is open to the UK's estimated 9,000 fish and chip businesses, with final results announced in 2027.
